Nina Dobrev will appear in The Vampire Diaries’ spin-off The Originals.
The 25-year-old actress is set to join the cast for an upcoming flashback episode in the second season of the US fantasy drama, E! News reports. However, Nina won’t be on the show as her Vampire Diaries character Elena Gilbert. Instead, she will be making an appearance as the original doppelgänger Tatia, Elena’s supernatural double.
‘Writers had thought long and hard about how to integrate Nina’s character into the show’
The Originals showrunner Julie Plec told E! writers had thought long and hard about how to integrate Nina’s character into the show.
"There's a lot of people that could cross over, and when we plan our crossovers, we like to think of the most clever way to integrate The Vampire Diaries mythology into The Originals mythology," she explained. "There was a character's name introduced a long time ago in season three in association with Klaus [Joseph Morgan] and Elijah [Daniel Gillies] and how they became vampires and a girl that they both loved a long time ago who was the original doppelgänger, Tatia. So Nina Dobrev will be visiting The Originals for a nice little storyline in our fifth episode which airs November 3."
Julie was determined not to have Nina on The Originals just for the sake of it. Instead, she wanted her storyline to be vital to the development of the plot of The Originals.
“We made a rule at the very beginning, like, ‘Let's not be number grabbers,'" Julie said. "We don't want to be doing crossovers for the sake of, ‘Look at us!' You know? But in this particular case, the character of Tatia is part of The Originals’ history and is kind of a dangling chad. It's something we brought up a long time ago and never paid off."
