The Lord of the Rings star came across the poorly pooch while walking in Shanghai, where he has been on location filming Smart Chase: Fire & Earth.

According to Yahoo! News, Bloom noticed the canine had suffered a nasty wound on its back and decided to take his new furry friend to a veterinarian.

He documented each step of the animal's treatment and recovery process on Instagram, using the 'My story' feature to keep fans up to date on his rescue effort.

In the first video clip, Orlando was seen helping the medic shave the dog's hair so she could be treated, while another upload featured the actor giving the female pooch a bath, keeping her calm by repeatedly cooing, "Good girl".

Orlando then shared a snap of the pup resting with a cone around her neck after the long day.

The British actor, who only joined the social media app last month, has yet to reveal if he will be taking the unnamed dog home with him to Los Angeles once filming wraps. He already owns a 13-year-old rescue, named Sidi.

While Orlando was playing dog whisperer, his girlfriend Katy Perry, who he began dating earlier this year, was thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, where she joined rapper Drake at his 30th birthday party on Sunday  - and ran into her ex John Mayer.

Her pop rival Taylor Swift, who also previously dated Mayer, was also present for the bash, which was held at Delilah's in West Hollywood.

Other guests included Taylor's model friend Karlie Kloss, the Haim sisters, French Montana, Jamie Foxx, Zoe Kravitz, and Shay Mitchell.
