Paralympics: the ones to watch

THE Olympics are done and dusted but South Africa’s medal haul might still grow – the Paralympic Games kick off in London on 29 August and will see 4 200 athletes from 150 countries triumphing over their disabilities as they compete in sports such as athletics, swimming, cycling, equestrian events, rowing, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis.

Among them will be 62 determined South Africans, including Oscar Pistorius who earned respect with his participation in the able-bodied event.

After their previous outing in Beijing, China, in 2008, SA’s Paralympic team returned home with 30 medals of which 21 were gold. Can they improve on this impressive total?

YOU’s Tom Raath takes a look at some of the country’s heroes who will be going all out for Paralympic glory such as swimmer Natalie du Toit and wheelchair athlete Ernst van Dyk. Read more in YOU 30 August 2012.
