In order to stay out partying, a UK man lied to his girlfriend, telling her he had been kidnapped. He was actually drinking at a house party, but his worried girlfriend phoned the police, sparking a police manhunt.
The 32-year-old from Greater Manchester told his girlfriend that his kidnapper wouldn’t release him until he paid a £ 50 (R 887.59) debt. He even had his friend call and SMS his girlfriend, pretending to be the kidnapper.
Distraught, his significant other phoned the police, which resulted in them launching a manhunt to find the “kidnapped” boyfriend.
When the truth came out, the police were livid. “The man's girlfriend was absolutely beside herself with worry and genuinely concerned that he would come to harm,” Detective Inspector Jo Clawson told the Daily Mail. “Considerable resources and time then went into finding this man, who it transpires, made the entire thing up so he could stay out and party. This is without doubt one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents I have been involved in.”
Police decided not to charge the man as too many police resources had been wasted on him already, but he was given a penalty and the incident has been recorded as a criminal conviction on his record.
