The bail application of Kobus Koekemoer, the stepfather who allegedly kicked Poppie van der Merwe (3) to death in October, was refused on Monday in the Magistrate’s Court in Brits.
As Kobus (43) did during his last appearance in court two weeks ago, he wore a black suit and white shirt with black detail. He has been charged with murder.
Kobus allegedly assaulted Poppie so badly on Tuesday 25 October on a farm near Mamogaleskraal, near Brits, that she died of her injuries that night at the local hospital.

The little girl lived with Kobus, her mom, Louisa Koekemoer, and her brother (5).

After the magistrate’s decision to refuse bail for Kobus, Christo van der Merwe, Poppie’s father, told YOU he was relieved.

“I don’t know what I would have done if that man had come out. I would have gone mad. I would have gone bush.”
Jacobus Ludick, one of the Justice for Poppie activists, told YOU that Kobus’ lawyers withdrew from the case after his bail application.

He said all the supporters, again dressed in Poppie’s favourite colour, pink, were satisfied that Kobus would be remaining behind bars.
Magistrate Moses Mswanganyi postponed the court proceedings until 25 January next year.
