Prince William 'didn't really plan' marriage proposal

Britain's Prince William "didn't really plan" his proposal to Kate.

The Duke of Cambridge popped the question to the duchess while they were holidaying in Kenya in 2010 because he has a deep connection with Africa and wanted it to "mean something".

Speaking in ITV's new documentary New Father, New Hope, he said, "I didn't really plan it that far in advance; like, I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it and I wanted it to mean something, other than just the act of getting engaged. She understands what it means to me being in Africa, and my love of conservation."

However, William admits he was concerned about misplacing the sapphire engagement ring of his late mother, Princess Diana, during the trip so he clung onto it everywhere he went.

He explained, "I literally would not let it go. Everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew this thing, if it disappeared, I would be in a lot of trouble.

"You hear a lot of horror stories about proposing and things going horribly wrong, [but] it went really, really well and I was really pleased she said yes."

The royal couple welcomed their first child, Prince George, into the world on 22 July.
