Proud to be me

When she became a mother herself, she realised that negative patterns of behaviour need to be changed. Her desire to help led to the formation of Proud2B Me in 2003.

The organisation focuses on successfully strengthening communities through empowering the youth and primary and secondary caregivers such as parents, childcare workers and educators. Support groups and life skills training are part of the programme. The goal is for parents and their children to understand and effectively communicate with one another.

For Adele, founding Proud2B Me has been a journey of healing, as she explains: “We are faced with a situation where parents have resigned from their family responsibilities as a result of pressures from poverty and crime. Seeing the difference that is being made in the lives of families has helped me heal my own pain.”

Jacques, who has been a peer educator in the Kayamandi Township for the past 5 years has this to say: “There is a lot of depression in the community. The programme has inspired hope into people and helped them to handle stress effectively. This has been a major success of the programme.” He adds that the support groups which have been established form an essential part of the sustainability of the programme.  Encouragingly, after hearing about the programme from their partners, many men are joining the groups.

This is just one of the success stories that have come out of the Proud2B Me programme which is inspiring positive change in the families that they work with. Adele shows that a desire to help others can lead to an incredible impact.

Proud2B Me Foundation needs funding & donations; with the current state of economy every rand helps. They also need collaboration with a printer so that they can distribute as many workbooks as possible.
