Kaitlyn contracted meningitis in February 2013. She describes this difficult time in her life on her Facebook profile. “That morning (12 February) I was dizzy, uncoordinated and had a horrible headache and body aches. I started to get bruises all over my body which is when my mom called 911 as I was unable to move. The next day my whole body was purple and swollen.
“The next week blisters developed on my skin, which were similar to 3rd degree burns which led to my skin falling off. Within weeks my fingers and toes turned black. The disease cut off the circulation to my arms and legs which led to all four of my limbs being amputated.
“The bacteria also ate away 57 percent of my skin so the doctors had to take the 43 percent of skin that wasn't affected by the bacteria to cover the affected areas.”
In the six months in the burn ICU I had 20+ surgeries, I was intubated through a tracheostomy, had a feeding tube, and one lung collapsed.
Two years later she learnt to walk with prostheses and now uses prostheses for her upper body.
“I wouldn’t change this experience for anything in the world. It has brought me closer to God and my family and has made me into the person I am today. I still plan on following my dreams in cosmetics and cooking.
“My life is just beginning.”
