Smart phones – how did we ever get by without them? On them we have apps to wake us up, apps that monitor how much exercise we’re getting, apps that allow us to do our banking, games, instant messaging and our best social media friends – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Life is but a dream – except for our nasty cellphone batteries that can’t seem to keep up with progress!
Well – that’s about to change. A new device that can recharge cellphone batteries in just 30 seconds may just be the answer to your prayers. So in the two minutes you take to make your cup of coffee, your phone will be ready for your next game of Angry Birds. No time lost from your techy companion then!
And you have a teenager to thank for this invention. While other teens have been draining their cellphone batteries with the latest apps, Eesha Khare from California has been doing exactly the opposite by creating a tiny black, rectangular type of supercapacitor that can charge cell batteries in just 20 to 30 seconds.
And we thought 30 seconds to Mars was cool. But this, this is way cooler.
Eighteen-year-old Eesha won a Young Scientist Award last month at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. According to Intel, 1 600 young scientists from around the world were chosen to compete in the fair this month.
The award, which includes $50 000 (R500 000), will assist in funding her education at Harvard University. "I can't believe this happened. I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy-storage device that can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume. The technology may also be able to speed up charging of automobile batteries,” she said.
Thank you, Eesha, for being such a bright spark! Now where did I put my phone . . .?
