Reese Witherspoon has spoken out in defense of Renée Zellweger. The Bridget Jones’ Diary actress hit headlines recently when she debuted what seemed to be an altered appearance. But while Renée credited a “happy, healthy lifestyle” for the change in her looks, others suggested it may have been down to some kind of surgical intervention.
'Why do they have to tear women down?'
However, Reese has now come forward to insist that those criticising her colleague were being “rude and cruel”.
“It’s horrible. It’s cruel and rude and disrespectful, and I can go on and on and on. It bothers me immensely,” Reese told The Hollywood Reporter.
“I know this is so Pollyanna of me, but why — and it’s particularly women — why do they have to tear women down? And why do we have to tear other women down to build another woman up? It drives me crazy. Like, this one looks great without her makeup but that one doesn’t look good without her makeup, and it’s all just a judgment and assault that I don’t — look, men are prey to it as well. I just don’t think it’s with the same sort of ferocity.”
Reese was joined by fellow stars Amy Adams, Hilary Swank, Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette, Laura Dern, and Felicity Jones for the publication’s 2014 Actress Roundtable issue.
And another issue discussed during the interviews was the recent photo hacking scandal that saw intimate pictures of actresses including Jennifer Lawrence made public.
Speaking about the incident, Patricia said: “I feel really strongly that there’s nothing deviant about two lovers sharing sexual intimacy. That is normal. It’s been happening since the beginning of time.”
“What is deviant is when a community decides that they can break into your sexuality, steal that from you, insert themselves, observe your private sexuality.”
