So where were you when you heard?
I had just nipped to the loo and returned to find a huddle of people in the corridor, talking in hushed tones. Looking shocked. What on earth could have happened? Had someone died?
Love had died – that’s what. And Vogue agreed. “Today shall go down as the day love died. #Brangelina,” they tweeted.
Of course love can’t really die – just look at Jennifer Aniston. It might have popped off for a bit when Brad left her for Angie, but it resurrected itself nicely when she met Justin Theroux.

And there or may not be truth in the reports that she tucked into a nice big slice of karma pie after the shock news of the Brangie breakup emerged.
But those of us who believe in the-happily-ever-after fairytale have been crushed. Brad and Angelina were it. Every time they stepped out on the red carpet love radiated from them. His eyes crinkled up every time he looked at her. She melted into his side. They fitted together like a hand in a glove.
I’ve been writing about Brangelina from the very beginning. In fact, I’ve been writing about Brangelina since before Brangelina was officially a thing, just a rumour that started because the chemistry between them in Mr and Mrs Smith was so sizzling you needed a hand fan to watch it.
I remember being devastated for Jen when her split from Brad was announced after that last weekend they spent together at the beach, all tender and suntanned and tousled. It was so darn bittersweet.
But then Brangelina stepped into the void. There they were on a Kenyan beach with teeny-tiny Maddox. There they were adopting Zahara. There they were in Namibia (Namibia! On our doorstep!), preparing for the birth of their first biological child.
Then there was Shiloh, already a pouty-mouthed beauty before she was a month old, gracing magazine covers the world over. Glossy-haired Pax came next, then the twins – twins! And a perfect pigeon pair at that! Could things get any better for Brad and Ange?
We watched as the children – each one bright and gifted and gorgeous – grew up, traipsing through airport terminals, tucking into treats, zip-lining in exotic locations, doing good deeds for the less fortunate.
Now their parents are getting a divorce. Stories will keep coming – plenty of them – as the fallout from the breakup of the world’s most famous celebrity couple continues. And I will continue to write about them. But a little bit of shine has gone out of the world.
I’m with you, Vogue. RIP love.
