Robin Thicke wanted 'controversial' VMAs performance

Robin Thicke wanted to "make people talk" with his controversial VMAs performance.

The Blurred Lines hitmaker caused an international uproar when he appeared on stage alongside Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, letting the 20-year-old singer grind up against him in nothing but a latex bikini while provocatively rubbing herself with a giant foam finger.

The 36-year-old star has opened up about the saucy performance in the new issue of Vanity Fair magazine, insisting he was completely on board with Miley's shock tactics after he was forewarned about her plans.

He told the magazine, "I spent my whole career playing it safe, being a gentleman, never doing anything controversial. I didn't see [the VMA performance] because I was onstage singing my ass off.

"They told me [beforehand] that Miley's going to take her clothes off and dance around and she might bend over . . . I just said, 'I don't care; let's entertain the people.' Let's give them something they're not ready for; let's make them talk."

The pair's risqué antics were followed by claims Robin had cheated on his wife, Paula Patton, with socialite Lana Scolaro, but the R&B singer insists he’s never strayed from the Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol actress, who’s the mother of his three-year-old son, Julian.

He quipped, "Seventy-five per cent of my songs are about how much I love my wife and how much I need her. We've been married for eight years, and together since we were 16.

"We're very lucky to have the greatest friendship; we're John and Yoko ? whatever that is ? that's who she is to me. I've always put her before everything and will continue to."
