The photographer, Alon Skuy, didn't anticipate that the picture that he took of Senzo Meyiwa’s dad, leaning out of the passenger window of the hearse at the slain footballer's funeral service – would get so many people goofing around.
Sam Meyiwa expressed his gratitude to an overwhelming support the family had received at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban by waving.
But people have been cracking jokes at Sam’s gesture and it has become a hilarious meme on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
When Alon was asked about what the photo meant him, he said: “What I saw was a man humbled, proud and grateful for the powerful tribute that the fans were paying to his son”.
He told Times Live he hopes that the fact that people find humour in a situation that has “profoundly affected the psyche of the nation will be cathartic”.
Meanwhile, Sam told The Times that people can say and do whatever they want or like. "What I was doing was showing my appreciation for the support shown by people to Senzo," he added.
