Shaking it off, shaking things up! Taylor Swift on ‘changing up the formula’

The 24-year-old songstress released her fifth studio album, 1989, on October 27 and the LP’s songs are all 100 per cent pop. And Taylor reveals record label executives were completely against her straying away from the country sound she was once renowned for. “The main thing that happened for me with this album was everybody was really scared for me to change up the formula,” she told her songwriting partner Jack Antonoff during a recent MTV News interview. “From the way people at my label would see it was, ‘Why are you messing with that?’ It’s our job to mess with that.”

According to the singer, record label executives were trying to convince her to add a few country songs to the album in an attempt to appeal to her original fanbase.

But Taylor refused to act on those suggestions, as she believed that approach was an inauthentic representation of her creative process.

“I just felt like that felt very exploitive,” she said.

Taylor adopts an independent perspective when it comes to professional decisions.

The Grammy winner pulled her tracks down from popular free music streaming platform Spotify last week and has defended her move in the name of artist integrity.

“It didn't feel right to me,” she told Yahoo! Music. “I felt like I was saying to my fans, 'If you create music someday, if you create a painting someday, someone can just walk into a museum, take it off the wall, rip off a corner off it, and it's theirs now and they don't have to pay for it.'”
