Shark attack: farewell, my brother

It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day. The sea was a turquoise colour outside the Lilienfelds’ home in Bloubergstrand near Cape Town as Gustav (18) made breakfast and his brother, David (20), packed his books for lectures.

Gustav watched as his brother’s hands moved slower and slower. Then David looked up. His long blond curls framed his tanned face as he smiled the smile everyone remembers so well.

“I’ve got five minutes to get to lectures. F*** that! Let’s go surfing!”
