The 38-year-old actor is dating theatre director Sophie Hunter and it has been announced that they are set to tie the knot after a small notice was published in the Forthcoming Marriages section of British newspaper The Times. They were first linked after being pictured together at a French Open tennis match in June but reportedly began dating in the spring.
'Watch this space. You never know'
Benedict's parents Wanda and Timothy wrote the short piece.
"Mr BT. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cmberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London," it reads.
Benedict and Sophie have worked together in the past, with her taking on the role of Annabel Blythe-Smith opposite her now-fiancé's Henry Clark in 2009 thriller Burlesque Fairytales.
It seems the engagement has been expected by Sophie's parents, as her mother dropped some hints when questioned about her daughter's relationship with the Sherlock star last month.
“Watch this space. You never know," she told British newspaper the Sunday Mirror.
Benedict has kept his love life relatively under wraps in the past. He previously dated fashion designer Anna Jones but the pair split in 2012. Before this he was with actress-and-screenwriter Olivia Poulet for around 12 years.
He has spoken about his desire to settle down recently though.
“Without using words like 'marriage', 'children' and 'family' - although I have just used those words - put it this way, I hope I've got other people to look back with me at that point. I hope I'm surrounded by family," he told the latest edition of British magazine Elle.
