Almost 26 years ago Andrea Venter was Rustenburg’s first test-tube baby. Her parents had waited 13 years for her arrival. Now she’s dead, allegedly murdered by a possessive ex-boyfriend.
In the early hours of 1 May Andrea ran screaming to the guard at the gate of the complex she’d moved into two months earlier.
Her hair and face were covered in blood. Her ex-boyfriend, Gerhard Jansen van Vuuren (30), ran after her, witnesses said, and stabbed her to death.
In her parents’ home there’s a knee-high porcelain doll with blue eyes and blonde curls dressed in pink ballet clothes.
‘‘I made this doll for Andrea,’’ mom Annatjie Venter says. ‘‘Because that’s how she is . . . was . . . my porcelain doll.’’ Then her voice falters.
Neither an interdict Andrea had taken out against Van Vuuren nor a charge laid later against him by her father, Dries, could save her.
‘‘I’ll never be able to hug my daughter again,’’ Annatjie says, sobbing with grief.
She and Dries say they had had trouble with Gerhard for a long time – he threatened to kill them too – even though the relationship between him and Andrea had begun innocently enough.
‘‘We thought he was a good boy. He had good manners,’’ Dries says.
Van Vuuren became possessive and wouldn’t let Andrea even go shopping without him. She eventually left him. It’s thought he followed her home the night she was murdered.
Van Vuuren tried to cut his own throat and is under police guard in hospital.
