Teenager leaps to his death after girlfriend is declared brain dead

According to OFM, Morné van der Westhuizen, a second year student at University of the Free State, was visiting his girlfriend Chrisna Botha on Monday when he was told she was brain dead. Netwerk24's Pieter Steyn reports Morne jumped from a balcony of the seventh floor and landed in the hospital lobby. Chrisna, also a Kovsies student, fell from a horse over the weekend.

Morné's brother De Wet told OFM news that his brother did not show any signs he wanted take his life when De Wet took to hospital this morning.

"According to De Wet his brother even walked with him to his vehicle and told him that he loved him when he re-visited Morné at hospital," the radio news site reported this morning.

A Medi-Clinic spokesperson said the hospital gave medical and trauma support to all who witnessed Morne's death, including supporting two people who tried to stop the student from jumping. He landed in the hospital lobby.

Beeld reports that Morné nearly landed on 77-year-old Willie Brönn. “It was loud bang," he told the newspaper in Afrikaans. "He fell right next to me. He landed like a bag of potatoes and lay dead still.”
