Joseph played uber-villain Stefano DiMera in TV soap Days of our Lives and has become one of the most iconic characters on the small screen.
The actor suffered from Alzheimers for years, his wife, Patricia Schultz-Mascolo, told NBC News.
"Joseph was a big 'ol bear with a puppy dog heart," she said. "I’m so blessed to have had these many years with him. I will miss him every day."
The actor, who has a son, Peter, and stepdaughter, Laura, first appeared in Days of our Lives in 1982 and had roles in several movies over the years. Tributes have poured in far and wide.
