Weight loss expert Dr Sally Norton revealed to MailOnline exactly which foods you should be adding to your shopping basket on your next trip to the supermarket, and why.
Cherries: Tart and sour cherries have been found to have high levels of antioxidants in them. This means they are great to help with anti-inflammation, boosting the quality of your sleep and aiding sports recovery if you exercise regularly, with research claiming it can help with side effects such as aching muscles and joint weakness. There’s no better way to enjoy cherries than with a dollop of natural yoghurt, making them a perfect healthy snack whether you’re on the go or sat in an office.
Avocado: Many people avoid avocados because of their high fat content. However, their levels of monounsaturated fats make them a great ingredient to help lower bad cholesterol which in turn means it reduces the risks of heart attack and stroke. A recent study has suggested that combining a moderate-fat diet with one avocado a day could actually lower your levels of bad cholesterol by more than a low-fat, or moderate-fat diet without avocados. Add them to salads or put slices in a sandwich with some ham.
Blueberries: These little beauties have high levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals making them a powerhouse of benefits. They can help with heart health, cancer prevention, enhance brain function and improve eyesight. Add them to your porridge in the morning or mix them into your fruit salad to get the benefits.
Cranberries: Another berry with benefits, cranberries also help improve heart health, prevent certain cancers, and aid in reducing infections. They have been used for years to deal with urinary tract infections too. What helps to make them so good for us are the polyphenols that are present. Polyphenols have been reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, to name just a few. However try not to go overboard on the little red berries as the fruit and the juice varieties have a high sugar content.
