A powerful photo of a newborn baby hugging his dying twin for the first time has captured hearts all over the world.

Taken 11 days after they were born, the photo of Mason and Hawk Buchmeyer went viral after their mother shared it on Facebook.

"It's the first time they have ever touched and as soon as Mason felt Hawk he reached out for his arm and smiled this big. We thought it was time for everyone pulling for our boy to see this picture."

One of the twins, Hawk, was diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a rare condition that affects the lungs.

The twins' parents Brandy Guettler and Tommy Buchmeyer regularly shared updates on Hawk's health on Facebook.

"We are on day 4 of Hawk have good days. Thank You for all your Prayers and Messages. Let's keep these Prayers coming because they are working! God is Good!" read one Facebook update.

Earlier this week, they shared the tragic news.

"Our hearts are saddened this morning as our sweet little man was called home to be with Jesus. He went very peacefully and we know he's no longer suffering. Please give us some time to grieve and try to start the healing process."

The touching image of the twins hugging has since garnered more than 125 000 reactions and over 29 000 shares.
