Last week I attended the launch of POND’S new anti-aging line, Gold Radiance, in Jozi.
The event was a glittering, celeb-studded affair with the eternally glam Jo-Ann Strauss as MC and entertainment by the stunning Simphiwe Dana. The gold-inspired décor included real orchids in glass tubes hung from the ceiling. Très impressive.
Other local celebs on the scene included former Miss SA Joan Ramagoshi, actress Shashi Naidoo, DJ Fresh (pictured with his wife Thabiso Sikwane), TV presenter Boity Thulo, former model Sonia Booth, TV presenter and actress Pearl Thusi and actress Mbali Mlotshwa.
I chatted to Olwethu Mlawu, the (gorgeous) face of POND’S South Africa and, while she says she loves the new line, her favourite POND’S product is still Flawless Radiance eye cream. Presenter and socialite Jen Su, however, is very impressed with Gold Radiance. She told me she loves the serum because it’s nice and light and leaves her skin with a delicate sparkle. Shashi Naidoo, however, is big into Flawless Radiance BB Cream. “It manages to match my skin tone perfectly,” she says.
After a bit of a schmingle (during which I ate waaay too many mini Waldorf salads), we were treated to a surprise David Tlale fashion show. The models entered the runway clad in golden cloaks and tossed them to reveal gorgeous gold creations that were all opulent and over the top, much like David himself.
I especially liked this dress, but mostly ‘cos it reminded me of a Ferrero Rocher ball, the epitome of “golden delicious”.
Feeling inspired (and possibly a bit dronk thanks to all the chocolate shooters on the dessert buffet), myself and blogger Lauren Watters of Dear Heart Beauty thought we’d put on our own fashion show using the discarded cloaks. We thought we were channelling “golden goddess”, in retrospect, we looked more like crazed Lindt bunnies escaping their wrappers.
As the night wore on, I drifted back to the dessert buffet where I flirted with pre-diabetes thanks to an abundance of chocolate-dipped strawberries and white chocolate macaroons. I’d probably have packed away the whole table had our shuttle not arrived to take us back to our hotel. But the indulgence didn’t stop there. We were all given the full Gold Radiance collection plus a huge bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne. Squeeeal!
While I haven’t had a chance to try everything in the line just yet, I’m most impressed with the Youthful Glow Day Cream (R189,99). Aside from containing skin tone evening niacin, it also makes use of wrinkle-smoothing retinyl palmitate and has an SPF of 15. I also like that it leaves your skin with a subtle golden glow thanks to real gold microparticles.
