In the 2 May issue of YOU magazine, South African author and decluttering expert Kate Emmerson gave us some tips on how you can begin the journey of decluttering and reorganising your life to experience a richer, fuller existence. Her motto is “LIVE LIGHT” and her purpose is to inspire you to do just that
While it may seem a huge task for many, there are basic tips you can begin with! Here are some extra suggestions in addition to what you may already have read in our magazine.
Tip: Begin with your bedside table. It will take less than an hour to do, and will instantly lift your spirits when you open your eyes each morning and don’t see clutter. Keep only what you need access to from your bed, and your most intimate belongings. Don’t let it be a dumping ground, and keep two books at most to alleviate the guilt of never getting around to reading them!
Tip: Begin by taking everything off your desk, giving it a good wipe, and only replacing what will add value to your tasks and productivity. Keep approximately 80 per cent of your desk free to enhance space in your mind. Kate does specialised “Arrest your desk” interventions if you need to call in the big guns.
YOUR LIVING AREA
Tip: Begin by removing any piles of stuff that don’t belong there ? paperwork, too many magazines, the entire toy room that’s been dumped on the floor, anything that belongs in another room. Think of your lounge as always being welcoming to guests at a moment’s notice.
Tip: Begin by writing down everything that may be bugging you, that’s on your to-do list or that may be occupying any amount of energy. Have ONE place where you collect your information, either your smart device, notebook, diary or computer. Don’t have multiple places to download your mind.
Tip: Begin with the simplest idea ? drink water. It alleviates sluggishness and foggy thinking; it will boost energy, relieve headaches and aches, and aid digestion. It helps “de-clog” your body. I keep a bottle at my desk and one in my car, and play a game that involves taking a sip at every red robot along my route. YOUR COLLEAGUES Start seeing everyone you work with as a reflection of yourself. If you don’t like anything they’re doing, in terms of work productivity and commitments, start asking yourself where you may be exhibiting these behaviours. Take responsibility for your world and start doing things differently. It will have an amazing knock-on effect! Kate Emmerson works from all over South Africa. Travelling extensively and working with clients on Skype and online, she’s location-free and will come to you to help you “shift your life”. Her latest book, Clear Your Clutter, is available in English and Afrikaans (Ruim Jou Rommel Op) at leading bookstores nationwide, on Kalahari at etrader.kalahari.com/referral.
