Charmian Carr has died. The 73-year-old, who became an international star after her unforgettable performance as eldest Von Trapp Liesl in The Sound of Music, died of complications from a rare form of dementia, her family said. The actress who played youngest Von Trapp Gretl, Kym Karath, wrote on Twitter: “It is with infinite sadness that I share the tragic news that the precious & exquisite Charmian Carr, beautiful Liesl, has passed away.” Kym Karath and Charmain Carr. Producers of the hit 1965 film Rodgers & Hammerstein said in a statement they were "deeply saddened" by her death.

"Charmian Carr played the oldest Von Trapp child, and in some ways she maintained that role in real life -- guiding, cheering, supporting and generally being there for the rest of her 'sisters' and 'brothers,'" said Ted Chapin, president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, according to CNN.

"She was a great ambassador, and we had so many good times together... I will miss her ... charm and her spirit."

Charmian is survived by her four siblings, her two children and four grandchildren.
