After a weekend binging on fast food and sweet treats, it can be hard to get back into the swing of things on Monday morning.
One way you can help ease the effects of junk food is by incorporating vitamin B3 into your diet, as, according to a recent study published in Nature Medicine, it contains a valuable metabolite (a substance produced during metabolism). NAD+ derives from vitamin B3 and has been found to regulate liver metabolism, lower cholesterol levels and speed up weight loss.
Sharon Morey, a nutritionist at Quest Vitamins, has explained the aftermath of eating badly.
"High-carb and high-fat diets are linked to increased levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, and ‘fatty liver’. This is a condition where fat builds up in the liver, affecting liver function, and can eventually lead to inflammation and scarring in the liver, similar to alcohol-related liver damage," she told Cover Media. "This interesting research indicates that getting more vitamin B3 in our diets could be a good step towards getting rid of these excess fats and improving liver metabolism."
And with options such as turkey, mushrooms, chicken, seeds, avocado and fish all being rich in vitamin B3 you won't have to change your eating habits dramatically. These foods also include minerals, amino acids and other B vitamins to help improve the overall health of your body.
Or if you want an easier fix, try taking a supplement containing vitamin B3. Sharon recommends choosing a general vitamin B supplement rather than B3 alone as all of the nutrients work well together.
There are other ways to speed up your metabolism easily; tucking into foods containing omega-3 fatty acids (fish being the main option), sipping green tea and egg whites are some of the food-based options. Exercise plays a part too, and something as simple as choosing to walk up the escalator instead of standing or walking instead of getting the bus can have a big impact in the long run. The more you keep your heart rate up, the quicker your metabolism will be - which is bound to come in handy after a heavy weekend.
