Armie Hammer is leaving a movie he was supposed to star in opposite Jennifer Lopez because of the scandal involving those DMs.
In case you missed it, the actor’s sex life recently came under intense scrutiny after anonymous Instagram account House of Effie shared a series of messages that appear to show him describing his rape and cannibalism fantasies.
Following the supposed leak, the 34-year-old has stepped down from his role in the upcoming JLo film, Shotgun Wedding. And while a production spokesperson initially explained his exit by saying the film's "imminent start date" didn’t suit him, Armie has now issued a short statement about his decision.
"I'm not responding to these bulls**t claims," he said. "But in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic."
A source close to the production says Armie’s role will be recast.
The Call Me by Your Name star was referencing the drama that has erupted after a series of graphic DMs allegedly between him and several women found their way onto social media.
A woman who claims to have had an affair with the star has been sharing screenshots on the Instagram account @houseofeffie (which has since switched to private).
The screenshots show the actor allegedly speaking to the women in a way that is domineering and violent, including describing scenes of sexual control and references to canibalism.
In other alleged leaked texts, he talks about his BDSM, anal sex and rape fantasies.
“Raping you on your floor with a knife against you,” he allegedly wrote before adding that he felt like a “god” watching the victim “crying and screaming”.
The alleged messages date back to 2016 and some are as recent as February 2020, a period where he was still married to his wife, American TV personality Elizabeth Chambers (38).
The pair announced their split in July last year, ending their decade-long marriage, and the actor recently travelled to the Cayman Islands where Elizabeth has been living with their two children, Harper (6) and Ford (3).
House of Effie claims at least five women were engaged in consensual affairs with the actor – and that each woman was led to believe they were the only one.
“We all got told we are perfect. That he wants to run away with us. That it’s our world and f**k everyone else. He loved us all in his and [his ex’s] bed and made us a cute omelette after,” the House of Effie account holder wrote on Instagram.
“We all had apartments ready for him around the world. So he met all our moms and they all loved him. So he told us all to be monogamous to him and wait for his divorce.”
After the screenshots began circulating on Twitter, fans questioned whether House of Effie may have faked the messages – something the account holder has denied.
But a recently resurfaced interview, in which Armie discusses his sexual preferences with Playboy in 2013, has only further fuelled allegations being levelled at him.
“Well, if you're married to a feminist, as I am, then it's . . . I don't know how much we can put here without my parents being embarrassed, but I used to like to be a dominant lover. I liked the grabbing of the neck and the hair and all that,” he said.
“But then you get married and your sexual appetites change. And I mean that for the better – it’s not like I’m suffering in any way.
“But you can’t really pull your wife’s hair. It gets to a point where you say, ‘I respect you too much to do these things that I kind of want to do’.”
The interview is more disturbing now that previous girlfriends are standing by House of Effie and making accusations about Armie's sexual kinks and treatment of them.
Writer Jessica Ciencin Henriquez, who was photographed cosying up to the actor in September last year, addressed the Instagram messages on Twitter.
"If you are still questioning whether or not those Armie Hammer DMs are real (and they are) maybe you should start questioning why we live in a culture willing to give abusers the benefit of the doubt instead of victims," she wrote.
"Because some of you made it to adulthood without knowing what this is. Abuse: cruel and violent treatment of a person or animal.
"It takes an army to hide a predator. Behind every abuser is a team of people working hard to cover up the trail."
Another woman who was recently linked to Armie, model Paige Lorenze, posted to Twitter after the screenshots were leaked."Anyone got a good therapist?" she wrote.
"Yeah girl, I'll send you the number," Jessica responded.
Armie’s estranged wife is “sickened” by the actor's alleged messages and believes the women stepping forward, a close friend says.
His alleged extreme kinks are a “complete shock” to the mother-of-two, the friend adds. “Armie appears to be a monster.“
"A lot of these women have reached out to Elizabeth and although she didn't want to admit it to herself at first, she knows now they are speaking the truth.
“Armie had a whole other side to him that she wasn’t aware of. Whether it was always there and he kept it hidden, or something happened that changed him completely, she doesn't know.”
