Fans were shocked when pictures emerged of Joaquin Phoenix sporting a definite paunch, grey hair and a bald spot.
But
turns out the 46-year-old Oscar winner hasn’t let himself go over lockdown –
his new look is in preparation for his new movie, Disappointment Blvd., which
is currently being filmed in Montreal, Canada.
Not much is known about the movie, which is directed by American filmmaker Ari Aster, other than that it focuses on “one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time” – played by Joaquin – following over decades of his life.
But although it’s a lot less glamorous tham some of his other roles, the award-winning actor seemed to be enjoying himself.
At another point he was snapped walking around set barefoot in underpants and a white shirt as he prepared to shoot another scene.
This isn’t the first time Joaquin has dramatically transformed his physical appearance for a role.
In 2019 he spoke candidly of the toll it took on him having to lose 22kg for his role as the clown prince of crime in Joker.
Under the strict supervision of a doctor, he shed the weight with a low-kilojoule diet which he says consequently also led to an eating disorder.

“Once you reach the target weight, everything changes,” Joaquin, who is a vegan, said at the time.
“It was something that I've done before and I swore when I did it before that I'd never do it again. It seemed like it was very important for the character and I think it ended up affecting me in ways that I hadn't anticipated.”
He says he was stunned at how it affected him mentally.
“You really start to go mad when you lose that much weight in that amount of time,” he added.
