She’s been estranged from her hip-hop mogul father for 18 years and now LaTanya Young (38), Dr Dre’s eldest daughter, has also admitted to being homeless.
The mom of four says she’s living out of her rental car and working menial jobs for food delivery services Uber Eats and DoorDash and at warehouses in the US.
“I'm taking odd jobs just to make it now,” she told the Daily Mail. “I got paid $15 (R60) an hour as an assembler at the warehouse. I'm trying to keep my head above water. I've been in debt for a while.”
While Dre has helped her in the past by paying her rent and giving her an allowance to help take care of her children – Tatiyana (16), Rhiana (13), D'Andre (8) and Jason III (3) – LaTanya says she hasn’t seen a cent from her wealthy dad since January 2020.
She adds her pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears.
“I'm homeless and I've been reaching out to my dad. His lawyer has said my dad doesn't want to help me because I've spoken about him in the press,” she says. “I feel like I'm damned if I do, I'm damned if I don't.”
LaTanya is Dre’s eldest child from his ex-girlfriend Lisa Johnson, with whom he had two other daughters, LaToya (36) and Ashley (35). The couple split when LaTanya was five.
“People label me as a millionaire’s daughter so they don’t understand why I’m working. It makes me want to crawl under a rock,” she says. “My kids are staying with friends – they’re not living in the car. It’s just me.”
Meanwhile Dre, whose real name is Andre Romelle Young (56), has had to keep a close eye on his hard-earned cash. The producer and entrepreneur legally separated from his wife, Nicole Young (51), after she alleged physical and emotional abuse during their 24-year marriage.
The Beats Electronics entrepreneur has to pay $293 306 (now R4,25 million) a month in spousal support to Nicole, the mother of his two children Truice (23) and Truly (20), as well as cover expenses for the ex-couple’s Malibu and Pacific Palisades homes.
The mounting stress of the divorce drama might have been the cause of the rapper’s brain aneurysm in January this year, an incident LaTanya claims was difficult to get details on.
“It was like pulling teeth just to know if he was all right in the hospital,” she says.
Meanwhile the rest of the internet also felt the need to weigh in on LaTanya’s issues with her estranged dad.
“A 38-year-old grown woman trying to shame her father into taking care of responsibilities she created,” tweeted US sports analyst Shannon Sharpe. “Why wasn’t she going to the tabloids when Dre was helping?”
“Unpopular opinion: This whole Dr Dre situation is interesting,” Twitter user TheOnlySanairia wrote. “I think parents should continue to parent until they die, or as long as their children need it not until the children are of a certain age or made so many mistakes. What happened to unconditional love and grace?”
