Winning an Oscar is surely the greatest achievement for any actor. But for Emma Stone, bagging the Best Actress award was also a moment to swoon.

Chatting virtually on The Jess Cagle Show earlier this week, the 32-year-old actress said it felt surreal to accept her gong when she was named best actress at the Oscars in 2017.

Why? Because her childhood crush was handing it to her.

"Leonardo DiCaprio," was Emma’s candid response when asked what her favourite memory was of winning the Academy Award for her performance in La La Land.

"That was what was going through my mind ’cause it was him. And I was like, I'd seen Titanic seven-and-a-half times in theatres. He was the love of my life," she said.

"I had a picture of him in my bedroom that was signed, that I had gotten for my birthday when I was like 12 years old. I was walking up to Leo and I was like, 'This is officially the most surreal moment of my life.' I couldn’t believe it."

Beyond feeling starstruck and describing the 46-year-old as "very tall" and "so lovely", Emma described it as a true honour to accept the accolade from the star.

"It was the fact that it was someone that I’d grown up watching and that I admired so much. As an actor, I think he's fantastic. I'd watched him in everything."

Describing it as unfair to lock an actor into the character of a past performance, Emma admits she still can’t help but link Leo to his famous role in Titanic in 1996.

"He’s stuck in my head as Jack Dawson," she said. "He just always will be."Now, though, Emma is convinced her past obsession is a little off-putting to the Titanic star.

"I think he probably thinks I'm like a little weird, because whenever I see him, I'm kind of like, 'Hey, how's it going?' You know, just in little moments either at the same event or something," the Cruella actress said.

"He's very sweet though."

These days, Emma’s moved on.

The Crazy in Love actress welcomed her first child, a baby girl, with husband Dave McCary in late March and the couple are over the moon.

“Having a baby has brought them closer in a way they never expected," a source close to the couple revealed.

As for how Dave (35) is doing as a first-time dad, the insider added that he is “hands-on and helping with their daughter”.

Rumours of romance between Emma and Dave, a segment director on Saturday Night Live, started in June 2017.

They announced their engagement in December 2019 when he posted an Instagram photo of Emma showing off her ring and they tied the knot in a low-key ceremony in early 2020.

The insider adds that although Emma initially enjoyed being at home with her husband and the baby, she’s also having a blast on the promotional trail for upcoming Disney live-action release, Cruella.

The film is a prequel to Disney's 101 Dalmatians and follows a young Estella de Vil, an aspiring fashion designer in 1970s London.
