Gwen Stefani has opened up about her first year of marriage to country singer Blake Shelton.
She was appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about her new makeup line, but all the 52-year-old songbird did was gush about her husband of nine months and how she’d left him “tilling the soil” on their Oklahoma ranch.
“He’s literally on the tractor turning the dirt for me when I get there,” she said. “We’re doing major gardening.”
“We’re talking about daffodils, we’re talking about like tulips. We did all the bulbs, now we’re doing wildflower seeds, now we’re doing xenias.”
Turns out she’s making use of the word “we” rather loosely. Seems it’s Gwen who’s giving the orders and Blake who’s doing the dirty work.
“I sent him home to figure out how to till all the land and dig a well,” Gwen said gleefully.
When Ellen asked if he has any help, she quipped “just one guy”. Apparently Blake (45) doesn’t mind just getting stuck in and doing all the work himself.
Gwen jokingly added she “likes it a lot when people do things for me” as she’s from Anaheim in California “and I’m lazy like that, but he actually likes to do it himself.”
However it’s clear she’s besotted with Blake, who she wed last July on their ranch.
“He’s my best friend, we just have so much fun.”
Gwen admits before Covid struck she had a dream of a really big wedding, but then “it got smaller and smaller, and as you know, the Lord works in mysterious ways”.
But she says their wedding “was perfect and intimate”.
“It was so exactly what it needed to be,” she said, adding that marriage “is just so fun” and she feels “very blessed” before Ellen added that they “just clicked” straightaway.
She also played Burning Questions with Ellen where she revealed “everything” she does to embarrasses her kids, the weirdest rumour she heard about herself was that she was actually a man and that her husband's nickname for her is “Pretty Girl”.
Meanwhile, Blake opened up about his deep love for Gwen and her three sons in an interview last month.
Speaking during this year’s Country Radio Seminar, an annual event where industry stars gather to host workshops and presentations, he revealed that Gwen initially thought her kids would make him run for the hills.
Gwen has sons Kingston (15), Zuma (13) and Apollo (8) from her previous marriage to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.
“I think Gwen thought when we first started seeing each other that it was just going to be a moment in time because of that,” he said.
What she didn’t realise was that Blake was on a completely different page thanks to the way he was raised. His father, Richard Shelton, who died of pneumonia in 2012, married Blake’s mother, Dorothy, when she already had a son, Richie, from a previous relationship.
“He took Richie on and raised him from the time he was a one-year-old, and my brother never thought of my dad as anything other than his dad.”
Richie died in a car accident in 1990 at the age of 24.
Witnessing the relationship between Richard and Richie inspired Blake to work at forming close bonds with Gwen’s boys.
“The example that my dad set for me was that [a child] wasn’t even a consideration [in a romantic partnership],” he says. “You got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it. My dad raised me. I could do this. I didn’t know what I was signing up for, but I was all about signing up for it.
“And every day I’ve fallen in love with the boys as much as I do with Gwen.”
