Tom Hardy has made a name for himself by playing some of the toughest characters in blockbuster films, including notorious British criminal Charles Bronson, Batman villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, and Venom in the Marvel superhero sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
If you weren’t won over by the 44-year-old’s acting, be prepared to be amazed by his Q&A session with BBC Radio 1’s Kids Ask Difficult Questions web series.
Tom was quizzed by children who wanted to know from the actor, "What's the naughtiest thing you've ever done?", "If you were a snack, what snack would you be?" and “How did you get into the TV?”
To the last question, Tom, a father of three, answered just as a dad would, “There’s a little door, round the back.”
“How did you get so muscly to play Bane?” asked 10-year-old Sam in the latest episode.
"If you really study the photographs [of Bane], I was really overweight, actually. I ate a lot and I wasn't much heavier than I am now, but I just ate more pizza. They shoot from low to make you look big," said Tom, who gained around 13kg for the movie to go head-to-head with Christian Bale’s Batman.
"People would lift up the lids on their motorbike [helmets] and say, 'I always thought you were bigger, mate' . . . I was just bald, slightly porky and with pencil arms," he said of his appearance as the musclebound supervillain.
While he’s had huge success, the Oscar winner recently admitted to Esquire he prefers enjoying quality time with his family than chasing down his next role. Tom won the best supporting actor Oscar for his role in the 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Revenant.
“I think there’s less reason to work, ultimately, because the life drive is to be with the kids and to be fit and healthy and eat well and stuff. If you’ve got a roof over your head and a bed underneath you and food in the fridge, how much is enough?” he told the magazine.
The Peaky Blinders star also shared how he enjoyed creating a routine, while being indoors during lockdown last year.
“I didn’t pay much attention to structure and discipline as a kid,” he said. “But without it now, being a father, I’m lost.”
Tom has a daughter (5) and a son (2) with wife, actress Charlotte Riley; and a 13-year-old son, Louis, with his ex-girlfriend, Rachael Speed – all of whom he’s careful about keeping out of the spotlight and he calls them his motivation for getting sober after being addicted to drugs and alcohol for years.
“I do have a weakness for the darker side of things, but I’m not dark at all in my own life. I love my family and my home life,” he shared in an interview.
“I put my heart and soul into my work, but when it’s over I get back to my real world, my family.”
