Breaking up is hard to do – especially when you’ve been married for 19 years. Which is why Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey and her actor husband, Clark Gregg, waited seven months to share the heartbreaking news of their split with fans.
But recently the couple decided it was time to go public and let the world know that they’ve decided to go their separate ways.
“After 19 years together, we separated in January, knowing we’d always be a family who loves, values and cares for each other,” they wrote in a post shared on both their Instagram accounts which was accompanied by a pic of the couple in happier times.
“We recently made the difficult decision to divorce, but we remain close and are deeply grateful for the life we’ve shared and the wonderful daughter we’ve raised – Jennifer & Clark P.S. totally crying as we post this,” the statement concluded.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D star Clark and Jennifer tied the knot in 2001 and welcomed their daughter, Stella (now 18), that same year. They appeared in the made-for-television movie Road To Christmas together five years later.
It was Clark who filed for divorce in Los Angeles earlier this month. But as the couple broke the news, they were inundated with messages of support from fans.
One wrote: "Please don’t divorce. Rethink again. Life is all about forgiveness and stepping over every stumbling block and moving forward. Nobody is perfect therefore divorce will not perfect you. Staying together gives you strength to carry on."
"Best of luck to you both!" another commented.
While a third person added: "I’m sorry for the strife. My thoughts are with you both."
Jennifer shot to fame in the 80s hit movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off opposite Matthew Broderick and received a Golden Globe nomination as Baby in Dirty Dancing.
Clark is best-known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played Agent Phil Coulson on the TV show Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and also starred in multiple movies in the franchise including Iron Man and The Avengers.
Last year, he sounded upbeat when quizzed about their marriage in an interview.
"When we’re in New York, a date night usually involves theatre, sushi and maybe a salsa class if she wins or binge-watching if I win!" Clark told Closer magazine.
The news of the pair's divorce comes after it was announced that Jennifer would be returning to her iconic role of Baby in a sequel to her hit movie Dirty Dancing, which rocketed her and costar Patrick Swayze to fame in the 1990s.
