John Travolta has shared the candid conversation he had with his 10-year-old son following the death of his wife, Kelly Preston, last year to breast cancer.
The 67-year-old actor says they had an honest and open talk after his son expressed a fear of death, and in particular of his dad dying too.
“(Ben) said to me once, ‘Because mom passed away, I’m afraid you’re going to,’” the Pulp Fiction star told Kevin Hart on his talk show Hart to Heart. “I said, ‘Well, it's a very different thing.’ And I went through the differences about my longevity and her limited life.”
But then, he says, he levelled with his son.
“I said, ‘Ben, you have always loved the truth, and I’m going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they are going to go or when they are going to stay.”
He also addressed the death of his eldest son, Jett, who died in January 2009, two years before Ben was born, after suffering a seizure while the family were holidaying in the Bahamas.
“Your brother left at 16 – too young too. Your mother left at 57, that was too young,” he said explaining that since death is so unpredictable, it’s better to view it as a “part of life” rather than to fear it.
He and Kelly were married for 29 years and they also have a daughter, Ella Bleu (21), who is following in her parents’ acting footsteps.
Meanwhile John is filming the action thriller Paradise City alongside Bruce Willis and Stephen Dorff.
It follows the story of Ryan Swan (Willis) who must navigate his way through the Hawaiian criminal world to take revenge on the kingpin who murdered his father.
