Joshua Jackson isn’t mincing his words when it comes to expressing what he thinks of the online trolls who have been making his wife Jodie Turner-Smith’s life a misery.
The British actress has been hounded after a story broke last month about how it was she – not he – who took the initiative and popped the question.
“For anybody who is freaked out by a woman claiming her own space, shut the f**k up,” the 43-year-old actor says, adding he thinks the internet is “racist and misogynist”.
In an interview with website Refinery29, Joshua revealed how he “accidentally” landed his 34-year-old wife in hot water when he shared details in July about how Jodie popped the question to him while they were on holiday in Nicaragua in 2019.
“I accidentally threw her under the bus because that story was told quickly and it didn’t give the full context,” he says.
Proving he’s an old-fashioned guy at heart, he says he returned the favour by asking Jodie’s biological father and stepdad for permission to marry her.
“I’m still old school enough that I said, ‘This is a yes, but you have to give me the opportunity [to do it too].’”
“And then, ‘I would like the opportunity to re-propose and do it the old fashioned way down on bended knee.’ So, that’s actually how the story ended up.”
Joshua, who has starred in TV series such as The Affair and Dawson’s Creek, says he’s constantly shocked by the racist comments his wife is subjected to on social media. It was particularly bad while she was pregnant with their daughter, Janie, who was born in April last year.
“It has been a necessary, but an unpleasant education in just the way people relate to black bodies in general, but black female bodies in specific. It is not okay. We have a long way to go.”
The couple met at a party in 2018 and things hotted up . . . fast.
“When I first met my husband, we had a one-night stand,” the Queen & Slim actress revealed during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers earlier this year. "We’re in a two, three-year one-night stand now.”
They wed in secret in late 2019 and Jodie says they’re constantly grateful for finding each other.
“I think it's really beautiful to be with someone who is so supportive and so loving,” she told People recently.
“We’re so similar in so many ways. We’re like mirrors for each other. And I just really love that human being. We high-five each other all the time about how great we chose.”
On the work front things are also going well for both of them.
Joshua is promoting his new miniseries Dr Death based on the popular podcast of the same name while Jodie can be seen in the HBO show Anne Boleyn and the film Without Remorse – an action co-starring Michael B Jordan.
