For a brief period after announcing their separation, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian seemed to have transitioned into co-parenting – and co-existing – with ease.
Kim supported Ye at listening parties for his album Donda, and would even bringing their kids North (8), Saint (5), Chicago (4), and Psalm (2) along.
He returned the favour when he sat and front and centre in the audience when Kim hosted Saturday Night Live late last year.
But things have soured considerably between the exes, with the rapper now claiming the beauty mogul is preventing him from seeing their children.
Ye spoke to Jason Lee from Hollywood Unlocked about his strained relationship with Kim.
The Gold Digger hitmaker said Kim’s security team once stopped him from entering her property when he dropped off the kids after a visit.
“Took my kids back, I’m driving them and North is like, ‘I want you to come upstairs and see something’,” he explained.
“I’m hearing that the new boyfriend is in the house, where I can’t go to.”
The 44-year-old says the incident prompted him to ask his cousins to intervene.
“My cousins had two directives [when meeting with Kim]. I said, ‘I want you to go and talk to Kim because I don’t want to talk to her and get into an argument’.
“There’s two things I said: tell her, security not gonna be in between me and my kids. And also tell her, don’t have my daughter wearing lipstick on TikTok.”
The Yeezy designer says Kim (41) still allowed North on the social media platform, even after he voiced his disapproval. He believes she did so to antagonise him.
“So I feel like it’s poking the bear or trying to antagonise me or create this crazy narrative.”
He said it was rare in the US for men to get fair custody rights after a divorce or separation.
“The American mindset, it’s like 99% female custody,” he says.
“My expectation is to say, ‘Look, we ain’t gonna be playing these little games’.”
He compared their marital woes to that of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Their marriage came under public scrutiny in 2020 when news broke that Jada allegedly had an affair with singer August Alsina.
But last year Will confirmed that they had an open marriage.
Ye says he’ll keep his issues with his ex-wife as private as possible.
“We not going full Will and Jada because everybody got problems on both sides and it don’t need to be aired out. Certain things. . . it’s just not finna happen. I’m gonna step up.”
Kim has denied Ye’s claims that he’s been barred from seeing his children.
However, a source close to the reality star said, “it needs to be arranged”.
“Kim doesn’t want him showing up at her home unannounced or coming and going as he pleases,” the insider says.
“The kids have schedules and do well with structure. She wants to keep that in place and thinks it will help them with going back and forth between her and Kanye.
“She wants to be able to let them know ahead of time what’s going on so that they can make smooth transitions.”
Meanwhile Ye is sticking to his guns and has threatened to take legal action against Kim.
“Don't play with my kids,” he said.
“Whoever y’all work for, whoever y’all think the family is working for, I’m telling you right now – don’t play with my children. And it’s going to be all legal. It’s going to be all legal, baby.”
