Big brown eyes, skin like molten chocolate, a smile that could melt an iceberg, a sculpted six-pack, dreamy dimples . . .
The list of the pleasing things this man possesses just goes on and on.
It’s little wonder then that Michael B Jordan – or Michael Bae Jordan as his fans like to call him – has just been named sexiest man alive by US People magazine.
“It’s a cool feeling,” the 33-year-old beefcake says.
He’s also pleased he has the last laugh over his less-than-charitable chums who thought he’d never be awarded the accolade.
“You know, my friends were making that joke, ‘Mike, this is the one thing you’re probably not going to get’,” he says.
Well, they can eat their words now. Here’s 10 reasons why we can’t get enough of Michael Bae.
HE’S LIVED UP TO HIS NAME
The B in his name stands for Bakari, which means “promising” in Swahili, and his mom and dad must’ve had a hunch their boy would turn out to be a somebody.
He was cute from the get-go and a child model, appearing in adsfor Toys R Us. When he was 12 he landed a role in hit TV show The Sopranos and then grew up to become a serious contender, earning praise for his performance in Fruitvale Station (2013).
But it was Creed in 2015 that really put this hottie on the Hollywood map. He played boxer Adonis Creed who might’ve been an underdog in the ring – but he was top dog in the bulging biceps department.
His date’s hand ‘never touches the doorknob’
HE’D MAKE THE PERFECT PARTNER
He may be close to his mom, but that doesn’t mean he’s a spoilt mama’s boy. Not only does he clean up after himself, he loves to iron and finds it therapeutic. “While everyone has their own technique, I like slow, deliberate strokes,” Michael says. Be still our beating hearts . . .
He also always picks up the tab on dates and his date’s hand “never touches the doorknob”. Did we mention he’s single?
HE LOVES HIS FAMILY
Until recently, Michael was living with his parents, Michael A and Donna, along with his sister, Jamila, and brother, Khalid, in a mansion he bought for everyone in Sherman Oaks, California.
Michael wanted to be close to Donna, who has the autoimmune disease lupus, and who encouraged him to pursue acting.
His family keep him grounded, he says. “My mom and dad sacrificed so much to provide for my sister, brother and me.
“They all have had such an impact on me and who I am and how I approach each day.”
HE HAS A SERIOUS SIDE
Following the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in May, Michael spoke up about what it’s like to be black in America.
“Too many people see us as public enemies, only some see us as humans, and
yet we need to be superhuman to survive,” he said on social media.
But Michael is doing more than just talking about change. In 2018 his company, Outlier Society Productions, was the first to adopt an inclusion rider, which mandates that filmmakers enlist a diverse cast and crew.
“I use my power to demand diversity,” he says. “It’s time studios and agencies do so too.”
HE LOVES TO SNACK
Michael starts his day with a hearty breakfast: hash browns, tomatoes, turkey sausage, cheese grits (porridge similar to mealie pap), an English muffin and bacon, egg and cheese on a croissant with a little jam.
He loves to eat, he says. When he was filming Creed his cheat foods were doughnuts, cheese steaks, pasta, pizza and rice. And when he’s in New York he never misses a chance to satisfy his sweet tooth with cookies from a bakery called Gooey on the Inside.
HE ISN’T SHY TO SHED A TEAR
Michael is a superfan of anime (Japanese animation) and his all-time fave is Naruto: Shippuden. “I’ve been a fan since I was maybe 12 or 13 years old,” he says.
“I’ve watched [characters] Sasuke and Naruto (BELOW RIGHT) grow up. At the end of it, it was pretty sad. I dropped a couple tears.”Got to love a man in touch with his inner softie.
HE’S A MARVEL IN HIS OWN RIGHT
To play tragic villain Erik Killmonger in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther (2018), he packed on six kilos of muscle to give him the bod of a god.
But it was tough, he says. “You take away the sugar, dairy, cheese, carbs and pasta. At first, it’s pretty rough. But once you let it go, it becomes easier. Your body stops craving it.”
HE ALWAYS LOOKS SHARP
This heartthrob knows how to put an outfit together. “I love dressing up – it commands respect,” he says. Michael isn’t afraid of experimenting with different styles and textures, which is why luxury brand Coach made him their first global menswear ambassador in 2018. From bomber jackets to black-on-black tailored suits, he always looks yummy – although truth be told we still prefer him with his top off.
HE SHOWS LOVE TO HIS FANS
If you haven’t seen the two-minute video of Michael acting out scenarios of the sexiest thing he could do for his fans, do yourself a favour.
When superfan Brittany requests a massage, Michael is pictured in a white fluffy robe, rubbing oil in his hands. “Just let me know if this is too much pressure,” he teases. Look out for another scene where he bites his bottom lip – it’s sexy as hell.
