In a world of celebrity offspring riding the coattails of their famous parents, Mia Threapleton is determined to carve out a career of her own.
Despite having Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet as her mother, the up-and-comer has elected to go by her father Jim Threapleton's last name. And her mom couldn’t be prouder that her daughter prefers to hide their connection.
“What's great for her is she has a different surname so she slipped under the radar and the people who cast her didn't know she was my daughter and that was important for her self-esteem of course," Kate (45) says.
Mia (20) has two credited roles on IMDb – including the 2014 flick A Little Chaos, which stars her mother, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci. Most recently, she was seen in the 2020 movie Shadows.
Speaking to British talk-show host Lorraine Kelly, Kate said she always thought her daughter would become an actress.
"Mia is 20 and acting. She's away now in the Czech Republic about to start in a TV series over there. I think I knew it was coming, I always suspected."
And then a few years ago she turned around and said, ‘I’d like to give it a go’."
This is not the first time Kate has spoken about Mia having not only an interest in film but also a respect for acting.
"What I really enjoy is that she's grown up not just watching me do it, but also learning how to respect it and that's what's nice for me," Kate told Lorraine in 2015.
The actress added that even as children Mia and her brother, Joe Mendes, took their set visits very seriously.
"They don't sit and hang out and watch the monitor and have headphones on and treat the place like it's their own playground," she said.
"They really come as a treat to work, and so they really observe and ask lots of questions."
Last year, Mia revealed during an interview with Variety, that Shadows was the first part for which she's auditioned.
"I had just finished school; was free of exam hell; and felt excited, nervous and ready to start auditioning for things – and hoping that the opportunities to audition would come my way. I just hoped I would get the chance to do what I had wanted to do for so long!"
I never actually spent much time around sets that my mum was working on," Mia added. "It was always a special treat. It's a very different experience when it is happening to you, and not just something I was getting to observe from time to time. I really understand why my mum has always impressed on us how hard the work is. She is right."
Kate married Mia's dad Jim (48), a film director, in 1998 and they divorced in 2001. The actress then went on to marry Sam Mendes, also a film director, two years later and they had a son together, Joe (17), before splitting in 2011.
Kate is now happily married to Edward Abel Smith (43), the cousin of Kate’s billionaire pal Richard Branson, and they are parents to seven-year-old Bear.
