Five days after being rushed to hospital following an alleged drug overdose and heart attack, rapper DMX is still fighting for his life.
Prayers have been pouring in for the legendary rapper who is on life support at New York’s White Plains Hospital.
Sources say the Party Up (Up in Here) hitmaker, who was deprived of oxygen for 30 minutes while waiting for help to arrive, has been left with little brain activity.
But his manager, Steve Rifkind, says these reports are untrue.
“DMX is currently on life support and in a coma. There are multiple people with inaccurate information about his wellbeing and it is not helpful and productive,” he says.
The 50-year-old hip-hop star was hospitalised in grave condition after he collapsed at his home. DMX suffered a heart attack, reportedly after overdosing.
He will now undergo a series of tests to determine how much brain function and activity he has. These tests will help his family chart his treatment plan.
“We are just waiting on the doctors to tell us what the next steps are,” Rifkind says.
The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, has made no bones of his life-long battle with substance abuse.
In the past he said his troubles with the law began when he accidentally smoked a blunt laced with cocaine at the age of 14.
In the years that followed, he was in and out of prison for a variety of drug-related charges as he battled cocaine addiction.
In 2017 he cancelled a series of performances to enter a rehab facility. His last stint was in 2019 when he returned to rehab after serving a year-long prison sentence for tax evasion.
Since news of his overdose broke, celebs have been rallying around the rapper.
Singers Kelly Rowland, Demi Lovato and rapper Missy Elliott are just some stars praying he’ll pull through.
Hip-hop producer Master P, who has worked extensively with DMX in the past, says he wishes rappers would do a better job looking after their own.
“DMX is an icon,” he says. “I just hate that we have to wait until something happens to one of us before everyone starts saying how much they care.”
Master P thinks the industry needs to form some type of union to help artists going through tough times, especially when drugs are involved.
“Drugs have killed a lot of our great ones or sent them to prison,” he says. “We need to prevent that.”
