Shawn Mendes has opened up about some of the challenges he’s been facing since his shock break-up with Camila Cabello and hinted that he may channel his pain into a new song.
Up until recently the pair have avoided speaking about the split, which happened in November, but now for the first time Shawn has revealed how he’s been coping since parting ways with the Havana hitmaker.
“When you break up with someone you think it’s the right thing, you don’t realise all the s**t that comes after it, you know?” the 23-year-old Treat You Better singer wrote on Instagram.

Shawn and Camila (25) were friends from as far back as 2015 but officially started dating in 2019.
In his November 2020 Netflix documentary, In Wonder, the Canadian crooner revealed that most of the songs he’s written in his career were dedicated to Camila.
“My song comes on the radio or something and I’m like, ‘Everything’s about you. They’re all, they have always been about you’,” Shawn says in the doccie.
“She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ like, ‘They’re all about you. Like every song I’ve ever wrote’.”
Around the same time, Camila also penned an emotional post on her Instagram account.
“I’ve learned a lot about love with this guy,” she wrote. “It’s not just the happy blissful moments you see in pictures and videos. When you’re in a relationship with someone, it feels like they are this mirror reflecting yourself back to you.”
The pair called it quits in November last year, announcing their break-up via a shared statement on their individual Instagram accounts. They reportedly split due to their hectic work schedules once Covid-19 regulations were lifted.
While they said that they intended remaining friends, Shawn says the split has hit him hard.
“Who do I call when I’m in a panic attack? Who do I call when I’m f*****g on the edge? I think that’s the reality that kind of hit [me]. It’s like, oh I’m on my own now. Now I feel like, finally, I’m actually on my own and I hate that,” he adds.
In an interview with Apple Music earlier this month, Camila says she has no hard feelings about the split.
“I love Shawn and I feel like there is literally nothing but love for him,” she said.
