The picture was to celebrate his 74th birthday. Clad in a colourful Gucci T-shirt and pink-tinted glasses, Sir Elton John beamed as he cut his blueberry and raspberry cake.

But sorry, Sir E – it wasn’t your confectionary creation your fans were interested in. Instead they zoomed in on the many jars of Marmite in the background.

Cue much online hysteria about the singer’s obvious penchant for the love-it-or-loathe-it yeast-based spread.

In the picture shared by Elton, it seems he has the chilli, Guinness and XO Extra Gold flavours among his collection.

“Elton John has a tremendous amount of Marmite and I’m a big fan,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Funny how he’s never written a song about it,” another quipped.

Even the company joined in on the fun and wished the singer a happy birthday.

“Happy birthday to Marmite lover Sir Elton John,” they wrote. They later added a picture of a rocket with the words “Fuelling Rocketman since 1947”.

Elton’s husband, David Furnish (58), also took to social media to celebrate his partner.

“I love sharing my life with you,” he wrote. “I love working with you. I love parenting with you. You are my one and only.”

The pair are parents to Zachary (10) and Elijah (8) – although whether the rest of the family also marvels over the magic of Marmite is a mystery.
