Most of us probably have lists as long as our arms of things we’d tell our younger selves – dreams we shouldn’t give up on, relationships to work on, when to have more fun and when to knuckle down, and so on.  But what would we tell our older – and hopefully wiser – selves?

Victoria Beckham has started the year off with a letter to her future self, which was published in British Vogue, five years after she wrote a similar letter to her 18-year-old self, also published in the fashion glossy back in 2016.

The big reveal in her new letter is her revelation about her departure from ’90s supergroup the Spice Girls – and it’s all because of Elton John!

Victoria saw Elton perform at a Las Vegas concert in 2008, during the Spice Girls’ first reunion tour, and it was seeing his passion for music that changed everything for her. “Remember years ago, watching your dear friend Elton John on stage in Las Vegas. He performed Tiny Dancer, as if it were the first time, and you realised this was like oxygen for him,” she wrote of the “life-changing” moment.

“While singing and dancing was fun for you, it wasn't your passion. That day, you started your quest to uncover your own dreams. It was time to step away from being a Spice Girl. For the first time, you were venturing out on your own, and it was terrifying. It was scary to close a chapter that defined you.”

Despite uncertainty about what her future held then, she went on to become a fashion and beauty mogul.

“I know you are still reinventing yourself, taking on new challenges, and ignoring the naysayers,” she continued. “You always look beyond the conventional wisdom to pave your own path. First, you found this passion in fashion, and most recently, beauty. What comes next? I'm dying to know.”

In her 2016 letter the mother-of-four addressed her teenage insecurities about her appearance – her acne, and being told she was “too plump,” and she shared the story of how she first met her future husband, David Beckham, back when she “was the famous one”.

“While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. He’s not even in the first team at this stage – you are the famous one. And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He’s going to ask for your number. He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.”
