He perfected an American accent, studied US sign language, spent two hours a day learning to play the drums like a professional and honed his body to rock-star perfection – and it all paid off when he found himself making history.

Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim actor to be nominated for a best actor Oscar for his performance in Sound of Metal, a moving story about a heavy metal drummer and recovering heroin addict whose world is shattered when he loses his hearing.

And while Riz may have lost out to Sir Anthony Hopkins, whose portrayal of an old man descending into dementia beat the competition, he made his point.
