His trophy cabinet is filled to the brim – from awards he won as young rugby player in Zwide in the Eastern Cape to the gold medal he received when he led the Springboks to World Cup victory in Japan last year.

Now Siya Kolisi has added a few new awards to his collection.

The Springbok captain and his wife, Rachel Kolisi, have been recognised as the most stylish couple of the year at this year's South African Style Awards – and it’s easy to see why.

Wherever they go, Siya (29) and Rachel (29) can’t seem to put a foot wrong.

Siya is certainly no stranger to blazing a trail. He made history when he was selected as the first black captain of South Africa’s national rugby team, skilfully leading the Springboks to World Cup glory last year.

Having started the year on a high note, there’s no doubt his star continues to shine. We take a look at how the Bok captain is owning 2020.

Leading by example

Siya’s leadership skills on the field have been widely praised but he’s been globally recognised for his work off the field too. During lockdown Siya and wife Rachel distributed thousands of food parcels to struggling families through his Kolisi Foundation.

He was honoured for his philanthropic work when he recently received the African trailblazer of the year award at the 2020 E! People’s Choice Awards. Though he wasn’t able to attend the ceremony in Los Angeles because of lockdown restrictions on travel, in a statement, he said he was honoured to be recognised by the American awards show.

“There are people across the continent doing the most incredible work and to be recognised as African trailblazer of the year is humbling,” Siya said. “During the lockdown, I was able to witness first-hand the contributions people make to better their local communities, so I would like to dedicate this award to every one of them.”

A feather in his cap

Every year the organisers of the Feather Awards come together to celebrate diversity and inclusion and for this reason, Siya was a shoo-in for the sports personality of the year award.

Now in its 12th year, the Feathers is dedicated to honouring LGBTIQ activists doing important work in communities across the country – but it also pays homage to people who have represented and inspired the LGBTIQ community with excellence and distinction over the past 12 months.

Siya received the award last week.

Stepping out in style

Whether they’re at red-carpet events or just hanging out at home together, Siya and Rachel always put their best feet forward. So it comes as no surprise the popular pair were voted most stylish couple of the year at the South African Style Awards.

When they head out to Sandton Sun in Johannesburg, where the award ceremony will be held on 22 November, you can bet all eyes will be on the Kolisi’s.
