Cape Town - Jennifer Lopez is facing backlash surrounding her role in the Golden Globes-nominated film Hustlers.
The 50-year-old actress stars as Ramona, a stripper who runs a side hustle drugging and scamming wealthy Wall Street bankers.
It’s believed the story was inspired by the life of Samantha Barbash.
The film is based on a 2015 New York Magazine article titled The Hustlers at Scores, which details the real-life events of Samantha’s time as a stripper at Score's Gentlemen's Club in New York.
According to court documents, Jennifer’s production company, Nuyorican Productions, STX Entertainment, Gloria Sanchez Productions and Pole Sisters LLC is being sued $40 million (R580 million).
Samantha claims the film producers approached her before production to get her to sign a consent waiver form but she refused to give her consent or waive her privacy rights, E! Online reports.
According to People, the former dancer also alleges the movie defames her by portraying Jennifer’s character as "using and manufacturing illegal substances in her home where she lived with her child".
In addition, Samantha has demanded that producers turn over all copies of the movie.
Jennifer was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the film but lost out to Marriage Story actress Laura Dern.
