Singer and actress Jessica Simpson is taking back her power.
In her memoir, Open Book, which was released earlier this year, the 40-year-old got candid about the sexual abuse she endured at the hands of a trusted family friend.
The American singer delved further into her childhood trauma by revealing that she confronted the woman who’d abused her eight years ago and forgave her, E! News reports.
Speaking during an interview on the podcast The Gift of Forgiveness, hosted by Katherine Schwarzenegger, the mom of three recalled the encounter she had with her abuser – whom she doesn’t want to name.
“I went to her and I just said, ‘I know you know what was going on and I know that you were being abused – because she was being abused by an older guy,” Jessica explained.
She further revealed that this guy, a friend of the family, would spend lots of time at the house. Even though he never touched her, he’d often abuse the other woman, who in turn abused her.
“He’d abuse her and she’d come to me and do the stuff to me and so, like in so many ways, I felt bad for her and I was allowing the abuse to happen.
“I told her in the moment, ‘I know that you have a lot to deal with.’ And I told her that she should probably talk to someone and find a way to understand those moments and to forgive those moments and to heal from those moments.”
Jessica then went on to tell the woman that she’d decided to forgive her, Daily Mail reports.
“ ‘I just want you to know that I forgive you and I don’t really care to be around you that much ever again, but I do want you to know that I know what happened between us and I’m not gonna live in denial about it’,” Jessica recalls.
Although she couldn’t pinpoint what had motivated her to confront her abuser and make peace with her, she revealed that her divorce from Nick Lachey played a role.
“I did a lot of soul searching; I was just in that place,” she said.
“I was celibate at the time and I was on this journey to explore myself. And I knew that I couldn’t move forward without letting her know that – I wasn’t going to just leave it unsaid.”
To which she added, “I left it unsaid for far too long.”
Jessica went on to reveal that she sent a copy of her memoire to the woman.
“I knew that if I was honest with her, it would clear my conscience. I even sent her the book and I told her that I hope that it brings healing.”
