The coronavirus outbreak has caused several people to go on a massive panic-buying spree before they self-isolate, leaving stores with near-empty shelves.
This means there’s the very real possibility that many people might run short of the most basic of necessities until shops get stocked up, and some celebrities are among those who seem to be affected.
In an attempt to make light of the situation, Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi and her roommate Miss USA Chelsie Kryst took to their Instagram stories recently to share that they had just one roll of toilet paper left in their New York City apartment.
The pair also revealed they couldn’t find a roll at any nearby shops after searching at three different stores.
“So, Chelsie’s mom said she’ll send us some toilet paper and I just think at this point that my mom needs to step up. I know she’s in SA, but she needs to start shipping some toilet paper,” she joked.
Lucky for them, Miss Universe president Paula Shugart, who lives in the same apartment building as the two beauty queens, quickly came to their rescue and gave them a plastic bag full of loo rolls.
Zozi has encouraged fans not to panic during this trying time and shared the importance of keeping informed on the Miss Universe Instagram page, saying, “We’re not in this alone and we will get through it together . . . and please, please, please stay informed.”
Here on home ground, media personality Somizi Mhlongo expressed his dismay in an Instagram video, labelling the panic shopping as greed.
“If there was a competition for exaggeration, South Africa would take it without competition,” Somizi said in his video.
“What’s this thing of grocery shops running dry? People are buying tissues . . . bulks and bulks and bulks.
“You’re probably a family of four and you’re buying toilet paper that could help maybe another maybe 10 families . . . What’s the greed [about]?”
