Jennifer Hudson (39) transforms into Aretha Franklin, the queen of soul, in the biopic Respect, which is directed by South Africa-born Liesl Tommy.

Aretha began singing as a child at her father’s church before finding her voice as a hugely successful artist. The movie also tells the story of her troubled relationship with her first husband, Ted White (Marlon Wayans).

The cast includes Mary J Blige, Forest Whitaker, Hailey Kilgore and Broadway star Audra Ann McDonald; and is directed by Liesl, who is from Cape Town.
