This movie comes with a lot of baggage. In this version of Richard Connell’s 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game, rich liberals hunt poor right-wing-leaning folks for sport, which led to the film being attacked on Twitter by US President Donald Trump before it was even released.
Then it ended up being pulled from the schedule because of two gun massacres in Ohio and Texas in 2019.
The expectation was for either a risqué satire or an extremely violent horror movie – but the end result is far from either, and too tepid to offend anyone. The Hunt feels rushed and farcical and you’re never sure whether to laugh or take it seriously.
Some scenes are fun – such as B-grade celebs getting offed without warning – but the plot is predictable and you never care about the characters. Plus the leads, Betty Gilpin (GLOW) as an army veteran and Hilary Swank as an elitist businesswoman, completely overact.
