When They See Us

Rating: 5/5

With the recent brutal killing of George Floyd by police officers in the US, the time is ripe for this mini-series based on real events.

In 1989, after a white female jogger, Trisha Meili (Alexandra Templer), is attacked and raped in New York’s Central Park, five innocent, black men are charged with the crime. The injustice that ensues is harrowing and their case is relevant for anyone who doesn’t understand white privilege, bias or the Black Lives Matter movement.

We follow the youngsters – dubbed the Central Park Five: Kevin Richardson (played by Asante Blackk as a teen and Justin Cunningham as an adult), Raymond Santana (Marquis Rodriguez as a teen and Freddy Miyares as an adult), Antron McCray (Caleel Harris as a teen and Jovan Adepo as an adult), Yusef Salaam (Ethan Herisse as a teen and Chris Chalk as an adult) and Korey Wise (Mr Mercedes’ Jharrel Jerome as both teen and adult) – from the moment they’re picked up by the police, and watch in horror as an institutionally biased system results in a terrible miscarriage of justice.

Co-written and directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma), the nine actors playing the Central Park Five deliver riveting performances alongside the likes of Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) and Niecy Nash (Claws).

In particular, Jerome’s Emmy-winning portrayal of Wise, who was tried as an adult at the age of 16 and spent almost 14 years in prison, is bound to bring you to tears.

This mini-series, which won two Emmys, is simply a must-see. –CHEZ POOL
