Residents of Kwahlati near Ladysmith in Kwazulu-Natal were overjoyed recently when images and videos started circulating on social media of what was believed to be diamonds found in their village.

Within a week thousands of people had gathered in the area armed with spades and picks to dig up the ground and get their hands on what they assumed were the expensive, sparkly gems.
